A wasp nest is normally constructed from chewed wood and saliva and starts off about the size of a walnut, before growing during the summer months. The nest can grow to over 30cm in width, and normally contains between 4,000 and 6,000 wasps, with larger nests holding even greater numbers.

In late summer wasps can become a nuisance to people and animals as the ‘workers’ become drowsy or aggressive while foraging for sweet foods or over-ripe and fermenting fruits.  It is at this time that they are most likely to sting, especially if they feel provoked, although they can also attack individually or as a swarm, for no reason.

All the ‘worker’ wasps will die out during the winter months and only the ‘queen’ will survive. The following spring she will leave the old nest or her hibernation cell and commence the construction of a new nest in a new location. The old nest will not be used again, although the location such as a loft can be used many times.

The greatest risk from a wasp is their sting which can be very painful, but for some people a sting can lead to a very serious medical reaction called anaphylactic shock.

The treatment of a wasp nest involves the dusting of the nest and any entrance points with an HSE approved insecticide powder. If the nest is inaccessible (behind a cavity wall for example), the nest can still be treated by dusting around the entry points, as this is then picked up by the ‘worker’ wasps and carried into the nest.

In most situations it normally takes around 30 minutes for our technician to complete their risk assessment and the required treatment, but this can be extended if other hazardous conditions exist.

Once completed, the wasps will quickly start to die off, but it can take up to a day or two for all wasp activity to cease. There is no need to remove the nest as once the treatment is completed the nest will not be used again, but if it is accessible and required we can return and remove the nest at a later date for an additional charge.

The wasps and their nest must not be approached or removed until all wasp activity ceases.
